BIOGRAPHY OF BLAKE EDWARDS
Director and screenwriter. Artisan of cinema, he is one of the few great Hollywood veterans, a master of sophisticated comedy, distinguished by his acid and irreverent humor. Son of art, his grandfather, J. Gordon Edwards, was a silent director and his father, Jack McEdwards, a theater director and producer. She began her career as an extra in a major Hollywood studio, then starred in Henry Hathaway’s “The Blue Knights” (1942). Thanks to his friendship with director Richard Quine, he began writing screenplays for him between 1952 and 1962. In 1953 he married Patricia Walker, with whom he has two children, Jennifer, now an actress and Geoffrey, who has embarked on a career as a director. He separated from his wife in 1967. His directorial debut was in 1955 with “When a girl is beautiful”. However, it is with Tony Curtis that the director stands out, reaching international fame, with the films: “The Adventures of Mister Cory” (1957), “Licensed in Paris” (1959) and “Operation petticoat” (1959). His fame, however, remains linked to the successful serial of the Pink Panther, with Peter Sellers, which begins in 1964, bringing to the screen the exploits of the clumsy police inspector Clouseau. His name is linked to great actors such as Audrey Hepburn directed by him in the film “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” (1961), Jack Lemmon in “The Great Race” (1965) and Bo Derek in “10” (1979). Edwards, however, gave his best in “Victor Victoria” (1982), a film halfway between comedy and musical that brought him great success with audiences and critics, obtaining an Oscar nomination for the screenplay, and “SOB” (1981), a merciless satire against the Hollywood star system. Both films are played by actress Julie Andrews, his wife since 1969. The two have adopted two Vietnamese girls, Amy and Joanna. During his 40-year career, the director received only one nomination and numerous career awards: the American Comedy Award in 1988, the Los Angeles Critics Award in 1990 and, in 1993, the Preston Sturges Award from the Directors Guild of America. finally the Lifetime Achievement Oscar in 2004.
