ATOM EGOYAN BIOGRAPHY

Director and screenwriter. Born in Egypt of Armenian parents, he lived in Canada. His parents are both painters. He graduated in International Relations at the University of Toronto in 1982, where he began to take an interest in cinema and at the age of 19 he wrote and directed the short film “Howard in Particular”. Intent on embarking on a career as a playwright, after his first feature film, “Next of Kin” (1984) is fascinated by the narrative potential of the cinematographic medium and by the power of imagination in contemporary society, in which man is increasingly alienated and isolated . In 1991 he made “Il perito” – considered by some to be his best film. It is a provocative account of the actions of an insurance adjuster who spies on the lives of his clients, while his wife, an employee of the censorship office, secretly records the pornographic material he is classifying. Thanks to the talent shown on the occasion of the first films, he was entrusted with two very successful television series: “Twilight zone” and “Alfred Hitchcock Presents”. In the ethnic film “Calendar” (1993) he explores his homeland (a theme that he will resume with a rather controversial outcome in 2003 in “Ararat”). Finally he reaches critical attention and commercial popularity for his work “Exotica” (1994) which wins the Fipresci Prize at the Cannes Film Festival and numerous other awards. The success is repeated with “The sweet tomorrow” (1997). It is conjugated with Arsinée Khanjian who appears in all his films. Arshile is their only child.
