BIOGRAPHY OF EPICA
Epica, formerly known as Sahara Dust, is a Dutch symphonic metal band founded in 2002 by former After Forever guitarist Mark Jansen. The name derives from the 2003 record of the same name by Kamelot. Born as a symphonic metal band with gothic overtones, Epica later incorporated strong death metal influences into their sound, so much so that Mark Jansen admitted that many call them “symphonic death metal”. The style of the band also has attitudes very close to progressive metal that have been significantly enhanced in the last albums. In particular, the band’s latest album is definitely prog death oriented. Other influences can also be found in the band’s music, including melodic death metal, symphonic black metal and thrash metal. Occasionally, Epica also incorporates electronic / industrial, power, ambient and Arabic / Middle Eastern elements into their songs. Epica are also famous for their attention to lyrics, which are very busy mostly on a socio-political and philosophical level.
