BIOGRAPHY OF HENRY FONDA
Actor. Son of a printer of Spanish origin whose ancestors were colonists who arrived in the United States from Holland, founders of the city of Fonda in the State of New York. He starts acting in the Omaha Community Playhouse, an amateur theater company directed by Doroty Pennebaker (mother of Marlon Brando). He moved to the Cape Cod University Players and later to Broadway, where he performed from 1926 to 1934, achieving considerable success especially with the comedy “The farmer takes a wife”. It is with the cinematic reduction of this work that he made his debut on the big screen in ’35 after being discovered by a talent scout who introduced it to producer Walter Wagner. The following year with Henry Hataway’s “The trail of the lonesome pine” he became noticed by critics and audiences and in a short time became one of the most popular Hollywood stars reaching the apex under the direction of John Ford. His long acting career was interrupted only in 1943 when he enlisted in the United States Navy to fight in the Pacific, for which he received a Bronze Star and a citation from President Roosevelt. In the late 1950s he also began working for television. Despite having starred in over a hundred films, many of which have achieved great public acclaim, he won only one Academy Award and a Golden Globe for Best Actor in 1981 for his role as Norman Thayer in “The golden lake.” pond) by Mark Rydell, alongside Katharine Hepburn and some career recognition including an honorary Oscar in 1980: “to an accomplished actor, in recognition of his brilliant achievements and enduring contribution to the art of cinema”. He had five wives: actress Margaret Sullivan in 1931, a marriage that lasted only a year; Frances Seymour Brokaw (with whom she had her famous children Jane and Peter) from 1936 until her death by suicide in 1950; actress Susan Blanchard from late 1950 to 1956; the Italian baroness Afdera Franchetti from 1957 to 1961. Shirlee Mae Adams, married in 1965, remained with the actor until his death.
