JOHN FORD BIOGRAPHY

Film director. One of the most honored American directors, John Ford was loved by critics above all for his poetic vision, even though he insisted that being a director was for him only “a job to work”. The son of Irish immigrants, he is the youngest of thirteen children, many of whom died very young. He began his career in 1913 when he left high school to join his brother Francis, star of a successful western series, in Hollywood. He begins as an extra and stand-in for his brother. He soon changed his name to Ford following his brother’s example. He went to directing almost by chance when in 1917 he was called to direct a series of small westerns, signing himself with the name Jack Ford. In 1923 he took the definitive name of John Ford by filming “Thief of love”. In 1920 he marries Mary McBryde Smith with whom he has two children, Patrick who will often collaborate with him in his career as a screenwriter, and Barbara who will be an editor. The first highly successful film is “The Steel Horse” (1924). From the beginning Ford has developed an unmistakable style, not only because his stories are always set in the great spaces of the West, but because he always resorts to the same themes and frontier places. Attached to traditions, Ford manages to capture the crucial moment of American civilization, such as the pilgrimage of the pioneers and the adventurous journeys of the caravans along the desert landscapes of Monument Valley that became famous thanks to him. He expresses the odyssey of his people even at the cost of being accused of racism towards the Indians. His masterpieces include “Infernal Challenge” (1946), “The Massacre of Fort Apache” (1948), “The Knights of the North West” (1949), “Wild Paths” (1956). Among the non-westerns to remember “Furore” (1940) and “A quiet man” (1952). His last film, shot in 1966 “Mission to Manchuria”, only apparently represents an opening of Ford towards melodrama. He has won six Oscars, two of them for war documentaries. He died of cancer at his Palm Spring mansion in 1973.
