BIOGRAPHY OF JEAN GABIN
Actor. The youngest of the six children of Ferdinand Joseph Moncorgé and Madeleine Petit, of Alsatian origins. The father is a musical performer known as Joseph Gabin and the mother is a singer who calls herself Hélène. At sixteen Jean dropped out of school to go to work. He worked in various trades until in 1923 he made his debut as an extra at the Folies Bergères using the pseudonym of his father. After having been part of some traveling companies, in 1930 he made his cinema debut with small roles in minor films. In ’34 he meets the director Julien Duvivier, who will lead him to international success with a series of films in which his character as a virile hero victim of destiny is gradually outlined, reaching its climax in the role of Pepè le Moko in the film “Il bandito of the Casbah “of 1936. Other directors such as Jean Renoir and Marcel Carné will contribute to making him the backbone of French cinema. During the German occupation of France, in World War II, he moved to Hollywood to avoid acting in collaborationist cinema, but in 1943 he joined the French Liberation Forces and participated, the following year, in the liberation of Alsace. At the end of the 1950s he was offered the role of Commissioner Maigret, the detective created by George Simenon, whom the actor perfectly characterizes. He continues to work until his death, which suddenly came from a heart attack on November 15, 1976. During his stay in Hollywood, a great love story is born with Marlene Dietrich – already known in Paris and also emigrated for anti-Nazism – which ends after the war. due to the actress’s decision to stay in the United States. He had three wives, Gaby Bassett, known to the Bouffes Parisiens – where Gabin sang with Maurice Chevalier – married in 1925 and divorced in 1930; Jeanne Mauchain, aka Doriane, married in 1933 with whom she divorces almost immediately and Dominique Fournier, model, married in 1949 with whom she has three children, Florence, Valérie and Mathias. In 1952 he became a cattle breeder after purchasing the La Pichonniére estate, renaming it with the name of La Moncorgerie.
