BIOGRAPHY OF CARMINE GALLONE

Director and screenwriter. The parents, originally from Sorrento, moved to Naples shortly after the birth of their son. Very early he began to write subjects for the theater and in 1911 his ‘British’ drama received a report of merit in a competition. In 1912 he moved to Rome where he managed to get hired as a generic at the Argentina theater. The meeting with Nino Oxilia opens the doors to the world of cinema and makes his directorial debut with ‘Il bacio di Cirano’ (1913). The following year he signed 14 films and prolificacy became a constant in his career. During the years of the First World War he worked with the greatest silent interpreters: his wife Soava Gallone – stage name of Stanislawa Winaver (1880-1957), married in l912 – Lyda Borrelli, Diana Karenne and Diomira Jacobini. In 1926 he directed the blockbuster ‘The last days of Pompeii’ with Amleto Palermi. In 1927 he moved abroad and worked intensively in France, Germany, England, Austria and Hungary. The most important work of this period is ‘Land without women’ (1929), shot in Germany and soundtracked in 1930, which achieved great success with the public. He returns to Italy to direct another blockbuster, ‘Scipione l’Africano’ (1937) – of which he is also the author and screenwriter – an important production with hundreds of extras and fifty elephants, for which Gallone was awarded at the Venice festival in the same year . His career continues with several operatic films such as ‘Manon Lescaut’ and ‘Amami Alfredo’ (both 1940), alongside the biographies of famous musicians including ‘Giuseppe Verdi’ (1938) and ‘Puccini’ (1953). In the 1960s he also directed two films in the ‘Don Camillo’ series, starring Fernandel. He died at the age of 88 of pneumonia.
