BIOGRAPHY OF MICHAEL GAMBON
Actor. Irish from Dublin, he moved to London from an early age to follow his father an engineer who participated in the reconstruction of the British capital after the end of the Second World War. Initially, he followed in his father’s footsteps and enrolled in the Faculty of Engineering. However, he soon abandoned it to give space to his real passion: acting. Back home, he trained at the ‘Gate Theater’ in Dublin, where he entered with a completely invented curriculum. Luck continues to smile at him, as Gambon arrives at the ‘National Theater’, after being personally selected by Sir Laurence Olivier. He works with Alan Ayckbourn who writes him as the protagonist of many of his plays and, in 1980, plays the role of the protagonist ‘Galileo’ in John Dexter’s show of the same name. However, in his career as a theatrical actor the Shakespearean plays are his real workhorse as ‘King Lear’, ‘Othello’, ‘Marc’Antonio’, ‘Volpone’, to name but a few. Sir Ralph Richardson describes him as ‘The Great Gambon’ and, in addition to having received numerous awards, in 1992, he was also awarded the CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire), while, in 1998, he was made a Knight of the British Empire and placed on the Queen’s New Years Honors List for services rendered to dramatic art. Over time he begins to get noticed, not only on stage, but also for participation in some mini TV series. Among the most famous, surely include: “The Singing Detective” (1986), by Dennis Potter, in the role of the protagonist ‘Philip E. Marlow’; “Maigret” (1992-1993), in which he replaces actor Richard Harris; “Path to War” (2002), for which he received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor and, among those in costume, “Emma” (2009) which earned him an Emmy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. At the same time, in 1988 he began his film career to all intents and purposes, acting in “Paris By Night”, by David Hare. Of the various interpretations that follow, only the role of the father of ‘Mary’ (Julia Roberts) in Stephen Frears’ “Mary Reilly” (1996) really marks a turning point in her career. Also remember: “Insider – Behind the Truth” (1999) by Michael Mann; Tim Burton’s “Sleepy Hollow” (1999), and Robert Altman’s “Gosford Park” (2001). Arriving in the 2000s, he definitely became internationally famous starring in the “Harry Potter” saga as the well-known headmaster of Hogwarts, ‘Albus Dumbledore’. Starting in 2004, in fact, Gambon once again replaces Harris this time, however, due to his death. He is separated from his only wife, Anne Miller. He has a license as a pilot and flies regularly in his private plane when he is not busy shooting a movie. He is famous for his quirky English humor: he enjoys making fun of journalists and telling them untrue things. For years, for example, he wandered around carrying an autographed photo of Robert De Niro stating that they had met and were friends.
