BIOGRAPHY OF GRETA GARBO

Actress. Daughter of a garbage man and a maid, she was orphaned by her father when she was just fourteen. Forced to drop out of school, she began working first in a barber’s shop and then as a saleswoman in the PUB Warehouses where she is also often used as a model for advertising clothes in newspapers. At sixteen she was chosen to interpret “Herr Och Fru Stockolm”, the commercial for the department store for cinema. After other small appearances in advertising shorts, director Eric Petscher offers her a part in “Peter the tramp” (1920) so the actress decides to study acting and enrolls in the Royal Theater School in Stockholm. At eighteen she had her first leading role in “The Knights of Ekebu” (or The Legend of Gösta Berling – Gösta Berlings Saga or The atonement of Gösta Berling, 1923) by Mauritz Stiller, which together with the screenwriter Arthur Norde gave her the stage name of Greta Garbo. The success of the film took her to Germany in 1925 to interpret “The way without joy” (Die freudlose gasse) by Georg Wilbelm Pabst. Noticed by the American producer Louis B. Mayer who offers her a five-year contract with MGM, she moves to Hollywood where she will remain for sixteen years making the fortune of the production company for over a decade, playing tragic and romantic heroines wrapped in the charm of the mystery. In 1930 with his first spoken film, “Anna Christie” by Clarence Brown, he won the adjective “Divine” so much so that the slogan “Garbo Talks” (Garbo speaks) goes around the world. But the diva soon leaves the scenes after her latest film “Two faced woman” by George Cukor. He leaves Hollywood and moves to New York. In 1954 she was awarded a special Oscar for “her unforgettable screen performances” but the actress did not show up at the retirement ceremony. She died on April 15, 1990 and is buried at the Skogskyrkogarden cemetery in Stockholm. She never got married.
