BIOGRAPHY OF MICHEL GONDRY
Film director. Born in 1964, he grew up in Versailles with his family and had a passion for pop music from an early age. Pursuing the dream of becoming a painter or an inventor, he moved to Paris where, in a graphic institute, he refined his technique and met a group of friends with whom he founded the musical band ‘Oui, Oui’, where he plays the drums. Until 1992, the year of its dissolution, the band made two albums and several singles and Gondry took care of making the related video clips. One of these is broadcast by MTV and seen, among others, by the Swedish singer and actress Bjork, who calls him to make the video of his first single ‘Human Behavior’. With the Swedish artist he has created an important professional collaboration by making five music videos, some of which have been awarded all over the world. Alongside his activity in the entertainment world – where he also worked for the Rolling Stones, the Chemical Brothers and Lenny Kravitz – Gondry is particularly active in the field of advertising. Thanks to the ‘Drugstore’ commercial made for Levis (1994) he was awarded a Golden Lion at Cannes. After directing the short film “The Letter” (1998), he made his feature film directorial debut with “Human Nature”, presented at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival. The next film, ‘If I leave you I cancel’, starring two unreleased Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet, forces him to the attention of critics and audiences as an innovative and experimental director, a builder of singular yet familiar images to the viewer. The film obtained, in 2005, the Oscar for the best original screenplay. Later he returns to shoot ‘L’arte del sogno’ (2005), presented out of competition at the 56th Berlin Film Festival, in which he describes the birth of love between a wacky cartoonist (Gael Garcìa Bernal) and his neighbor. house (Charlotte Gainsbourg). Three years later his fourth feature film is released, a comedy that moves away from previous films to pay homage to cinema. ‘Be Kind Rewind’, with a hilarious Jack Black. In the same year he shoots ‘Interior Design’, one of the three episodes that make up the film ‘Tôkiô’, presented at the 61st Cannes Film Festival in the ‘Un certain regard’ section.
