BIOGRAPHY OF ALEJANDRO GONZÁLEZ IÑÁRRITU
Alejandro González Iñárritu was born in Mexico City on August 15, 1963. The first part of his childhood is radiant, at least until his father loses his post as a bank manager and is forced to fall back on a not so profitable profession: that of fruits and vegetables.
During his teens, Alejandro challenges the oceans by working as a ship’s hub. The passion for travel will lead him to stop in Europe and Africa, where he will open up to different cultures and begin to become passionate about people’s lives.
Once back home, he studied Communication at university and became conductor and artistic director of the radio station specializing in rock WFM.
Music will bring him closer to cinema, prompting him to write the soundtrack of 5 films. From the notes Alejandro then moved to the theater and then founded, in the 90s, the Z Film, a film and television production company.
After a medium-length film for TV starring Miguel Bosé and some short films, Iñárritu finally signs his first feature film: Amores Perros (2000). We cannot speak of this award-winning film on several occasions and Oscar nominated for best foreign film without mentioning the artistic encounter that made it possible. Let’s talk about the collaboration with the screenwriter Guillermo Arriaga, which will bring good luck too 21 Grams is Babel, movies that like Amores Perros they are distinguished by the intertwining of various stories, a non-linear narrative trend, an extraordinary ability to tell the Mexican reality and the human heart, and a strong drama. After Babel, the director’s relations with Arriaga they stop abruptly: the screenwriter claims co-direction of the films made together, but Iñárritu does not consider it. The first film without Guillermo Arriaga is Biutiful (2010), a harrowing story of fatherhood, poverty and disease. He is the protagonist Javier Bardem, which a Cannes wins the award for the best male interpretation. Entirely shot in Spanish language, Biutiful enters the five of the possible winners of the Oscar for the best foreign film.
With Birdman (2014), presented at the 71st Venice Film Festival, the director directs his first comedy. The story is that of a former movie star who, after becoming famous thanks to a superhero, tries to get out of oblivion by staging a play by Raymond Carver. To play this character, who has a melancholy side, Iñárritu calls Michael Keaton.
TO Birdman will follow, in 2015, The Revenant, which tells the story of an unfortunate trapper played by Leonardo Dicaprio. It supports him Tom Hardy. Both for Birdman that for Revenant, Iñárritu gets the prize Oscar for directing, becoming the third director after Joseph L. Mankiewicz is John Ford to win the prestigious statuette for two years in a row.
