Why hasn’t Samantha Jones, Kim Cattrall’s character in Sex and the City, rebooted?
Original cast members Sarah Jessica Parker (Carrie Bradshaw), Cynthia Nixon (Miranda Hobbes) and Kristin Davis (Charlotte York Goldenblatt) all signed on for the project which was teased on July 9.
The ten episode show is called “And just like that …”. The series has been in production since June, but it’s unclear when it will debut on the streaming platform. In particular, a main star is missing, Kim Cattrall will not reprise her role in any capacity.
“Never. That’s a no on my part,” Cattrall told the Daily Mail in 2019 when asked if she would ever consider a SATC revival. She also hinted at a feud with her former co-stars. “You learn life lessons and my lesson is to work with good people and try to make it fun.”
You will recall that after Cattrall’s brother Chris passed away in 2018, Jessica Parker sent her condolences through social media.
“My mom asked me today ‘When will this @sarahjessicaparker, this hypocrite, leave you alone?'” Cattrall posted on her Instagram account with a link to a New York Post article that speculated on the original show’s toxic culture in the workplace.
“Your continued reaching out is a painful reminder of how cruel you really were then and now. Let me be VERY clear. (If I haven’t already) You are not my family. You are not my friend. So I am writing to tell you one last time to stop exploiting our tragedy in order to restore your “good girl” character, “she concluded.
So how will the HBO Max revival resolve Samantha’s absence? HBO Max content manager Casey Bloys revealed to TV Line that they are not trying to make a remake.
“They’re not trying to say that these characters are reliving their 30s. It’s really a story of women in their fifties, and they’re dealing with things that people face in their fifties, ”Bloys said.
Bloys added that “friendships are fading” and that is how her absence will be treated “organically” in the new series.
