BIOGRAPHY OF ALEKSEJ GERMAN

Director, screenwriter and actor. Son of the screenwriter Yuri German, he studied with Grigori Kozintsev at the Leningrad State Institute of Theater, Music, and Cinema, where he graduated in 1960. In 1964 he began working for Lenfilm Studios where, four years later, he assisted Grigori Aronov in the direction of “Sedmoy Sputnik”. He made his directorial debut only in 1971, the year in which he directed “Proverka na Dorogakh” (“Trial of the Road”), based on a story written by his father Yuri, which tells the painful story of a German soldier who, during the Second World War , captured by the Red Army, attempts to prove his Russian origins. Shot in black and white, the film was censored by the communist regime – it will only be released in 1986 thanks to Gorbachev’s Perestroika – but manages to be distributed in Europe, where it obtains enormous critical acclaim. The film, which arouses the furor of the State Commission for Cinematography, causes his dismissal from Lenfilm Studios, where he is never formally reinstated. His second feature film, “Dvadtsat Dney Bez Voyny” (“Twenty Days Without War”, 1977), screened both in the Soviet Union and abroad, met with critical and public acclaim. Like his first two works, also the third film he directed, “Moy Drug Ivan Lapshin” (“My Friend Ivan Lapshin”, 1986) has problems at the production, distribution and censorship level. The film, considered one of the Soviet masterpieces of all time, reconstructs the Stalinist climate of the 1930s. In 1990 he was a member of the jury at the 43rd Cannes Film Festival. “Khrustalyov, Mashinu!” (“Khrustalyov, My Car!”, 1998), his fourth and last feature, is presented in competition at the 51st Cannes Film Festival. Since 1980 he has also worked as a film and television actor. Despite having made only six films over the course of a career spanning over 40 years, he is considered by many Russian critics, film buffs and viewers to be the most important figure in national cinema after Andrei Tarkovsky. He is the father of the Russian director Aleksei German Jr., winner, with “Bumazhnyi soldat” (2008), of the Silver Lion for best direction at the Venice International Film Festival. He dies at the age of 74.
