BIOGRAPHY OF ANDY GARCIA
Actor. Originally from Cuba, his family moved to Miami Beach, Florida in 1961 after Fidel Castro came to power. Immigrant, with little command of the English language, he spends his childhood defending himself from the attacks of other children who make fun of him. Things change over the years. His father manages to set up a successful company that imports perfumes and fragrances while Andy becomes one of the best-known boys in the school he attends thanks to his appearance and above all his skills as a basketball player. During the last year of high school, however, luck turned his back, he fell ill with hepatitis and mononucleosis and was forced to abandon the idea of a career in the world of sport. After graduating, he enrolled at Florida International University and began acting in local theater companies. More determined than ever to become an actor, he moved to Los Angeles in the late 1970s. To support himself he is forced to do several jobs, but finally in 1981 he manages to get a part in the first episode of the TV series “Hill Street Blues”. Some appearances also on the big screen followed until director Hal Ashby chose him for the role of heroin trafficker Angel Moldonado in “8 Million Ways to Die” (1986). His performance is particularly appreciated by director Brian De Palma, who was looking for the right actor to play one of Al Capone’s henchmen in his “The Untouchables” (1987). After having highlighted himself with “Black Rain – Dirty Rain” (1989, by Ridley Scott, next to Michael Douglas) and “Dirty Business” (1990, by Mike Figgis, next to Richard Gere) in 1990 it is the turn of “Il godfather part III “. Francis Ford Coppola entrusts him with the role of Don Vito Corleone’s illegitimate nephew, and his performance is convincing enough to earn him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor and also international success.
