BIOGRAPHY OF ARI FOLMAN

Director, screenwriter, composer, actor. After his military service in the Israeli army, driven by a vivid imagination and a passion for telling stories, he began his film studies. With his first feature film, “Comfortably Numb” (1991), comic and surreal testimony of his anxiety attacks during the first Gulf War, he won the prize for best documentary at the Israel Film Academy. In 1996, together with Ori Sivan, he made “Clara Hakedosha”, a film based on the story of the Czech writer Pavel Kohout, with which he obtained seven awards at the Israel Film Academy and critical acclaim in Europe and America. Follows “Made in Israel” (2001), a futuristic work, for which he also composes the soundtrack. At the same time, from the first half of the nineties, he began working for Israeli TV, making documentaries in the occupied territories, writing screenplays and composing soundtracks for various serials, including “Be tipul” (2005). It is precisely by collaborating with TV that he approaches animation, introducing each episode of the series “The Material That Love Is Made of” (2004) with short animated documentaries, which illustrate theories on the evolution of love. This last experience led him to experiment with animation in the latest film, presented in competition at the 61st Cannes Film Festival and winner of the Golden Globe for best foreign film: “Waltz with Bashir” (2008), a work in which the theme of war, the conflict that upset Lebanon in the early 1980s and which he experienced firsthand in its contradictions when he was a soldier. Folman was called to be part of the jury of the 69th Venice International Film Festival.
