BIOGRAPHY OF AVA GARDNER
Actress. She was born in the years of the Great Depression, in a small rural town in one of the many tobacco plantations of the Deep South. The youngest of seven children of a very poor family, she was discovered at eighteen, during a trip to New York, by an agent of the MGM. who had seen a picture of her in the window of a Gardner’s brother-in-law photographer. She began her internship as an actress in Hollywood, working as an extra in numerous films, until she made herself known alongside Burt Lancaster in the black film, based on a short story by Hemingway, “The gangsters” (1946) by Robert Siodmak. Though uneducated (at twenty-three she had only read the “Bible” and “Gone with the Wind”) and perpetually unsure, her overwhelming charm soon made her the most beautiful actress in Hollywood. But her incredible beauty is also a curse that marks her both in life and in career. In 1952 she played with Peck, the adventurous film “The Snows of Kilimanjaro” by Henry King. She is finally enhanced in John Ford’s exotic “Mogambo” (1953) playing one of her most romantic roles alongside two cinema greats, Clark Gable and Grace Kelly. In 1954 she was called, together with Bogart, to create the laughable character of “The Barefoot Countess” by Joseph Mankiewicz. In 1956 she worked with Cukor who directed her in the melodrama “Mixed Blood”. In 1958 she plays Hermann Kosterlitz’s “Maja desnuda” and in 1959 a dramatic character in Stanley Kramer’s “The Last Beach”. At the end of the 1950s, Gardner is already a diva with three failed marriages behind her: with Mickey Rooney in 1943, with Artie Shaw in 1946 and with the great Frank Sinatra in 1957. He also has a long relationship with Walter Chiari for which he animates the nights of the Roman dolce vita giving a lot of work to the nascent category of “paparazzi”. The night of the iguana “by John Huston, soon after he moved to Spain, frequenting the environment of the bullfights; then he moved to London to avoid the taxman. The latest films are little more than luxury appearances, such as “The Man of the Seven Capestri” (1972), in which she plays the character of an actress; “Earthquake” (1974); “The garden of happiness” (1975); “Cassandra Crossing” (1976). Disillusioned and embittered, Gardner spends the last years of her life locked away in her London apartment, in the company of her faithful housekeeper and her beloved dog. He died of pneumonia on January 25, 1990, after having handed over to an editor the material of the autobiography “Ava: My Story”, published in 1991.
