BIOGRAPHY OF BEN GAZZARA
Actor and director. His parents are Sicilian immigrants to America. Going against the plans of the family, of humble conditions, he intends to become an actor and approaches the theater. He studies with Erwin Piscator and is subsequently admitted to the ‘Actors’ Studio’. On Broadway he enjoyed immediate success, mainly thanks to his performance in “A Hautful of Rain” (1955). The film debut, on the other hand, was in 1957 and immediately with a leading part in “A Wrong Man”, by Jack Garfein, a film that obtained the favor of critics but not of the general public. The film that truly consecrates him to international success is the one signed by Otto Preminger, “Anatomy of a murder” (1959). However, his potential will only be put to good use by the directors of New Hollywood, who will be able to make the most of this subtle and introverted actor. He remembers his acting in the drama “La sera della prima” (1977), by John Cassavetes, alongside the extraordinary Gena Rowlands. In the same year is also his first directing for a TV feature film: “A friend to save”, starring the main character of the series “Colombo”. Meanwhile, he also begins to appear in various television series. At the beginning of the Eighties Italy noticed him thanks to Marco Ferreri who wrote him for “Stories of ordinary madness” (1981), in which he made one of his most touching tests. Collaborations with Italian cinema continue, some good others less so. Even the return home does not seem to help his career and films of little value follow one another. Once he is over sixty, Gazzara really thinks his acting career is over, but that’s not the case. He inaugurated the nineties by trying his hand at directing a film destined for the big screen: “Oltre l’oceano” (1990). Later, he appears in thirty-eight films and divides himself between the small and the big screen. Exceeding all expectations, he also acted for most of the 2000s. We remember his participation in the independent production of “Dogville” (2003), signed by Lars von Trier, and his last performance in the film “13”, by Géla Babluani. He has been married three times and appears to have also had an affair with Audrey Hepburn, with whom he starred in two films. He died of pancreatic cancer and precisely on the death anniversary of best friend Cassavetes.
