BIOGRAPHY OF BERNARD ÉMOND

Director and screenwriter. At a very young age, together with others, he founded the “Group of Video Intervention” and during the seventies he collaborated on many independent productions. After graduating in Anthropology, he decides to move for a few years to the Canadian Arctic where he starts working on local television, training new Inuit talents for the broadcaster. At the beginning of the nineties he landed on the documentary making “Ceux qui ont le pas léger meurent sans laisser de traces” (1992), a tribute to a stranger who lost his life in the working class suburbs of Montréal. The medium-length film receives the “André Leroux” award, given by the Québec Film Critics Association (AQCC) for the best documentary. In 1994 it was the turn of “L’instant et la patience” (1994), which shot in the nursing home where he saw his mother die, and the following year he directed “La terre des autres” (1995), in which attempts a parallel between the Palestinian situation and that of native Canadians. In 1997 his “L’épreuve du feu” which tells the despair of the victims of the fires, won two AQCC awards. In 2000 he made his latest documentary, “Le temps et le lieu”, about the disappearance of peasant traditions, before moving on to the fictional feature film with “La femme qui boit”, which marked the beginning of his intense partnership the following year. artistic with the actress Élise Guilbault. His first film, like the following “20h17 rue Darling” (2003), was selected for the International Critics’ Week of the Cannes Film Festival. In 2005 the Cinémateque of Québec dedicated a retrospective to him and it was in this period that his attention towards human frailties and the spirit of redemption that runs through his characters is taking shape. In the same year, in fact, he started the project of a trilogy centered on the theological virtues – faith, hope and charity – which starts from “La neuvaine” (2005). The film won the AQCC award for best Canadian film, won the Ecumenical Jury Prize at the Locarno International Film Festival and earned its protagonist, Patrick Dolet, the Pardo d’Argento for best male performer. In the autumn of 2006 he shoots the second chapter of the trilogy, “Contre toute espérance”, presented once again in Locarno, and in 2009 he directs “La donation” which won the Youth Jury Prize at the Swiss festival. Meanwhile, in 2008 he wrote “Ce qu’il faut pour vivre” by Benoît Pilon for which he won the Genie Award, the Canadian Academy, for best screenplay.
