BIOGRAPHY OF BILLY CRYSTAL
Actor. Not many people can boast of having had Billy Holliday as a babysitter, but Billy Crystal is among them. Son of a jazz promoter (who had founded the Commodore record company), he grew up among the major stars of the American jazz firmament. He therefore lived in show business from the beginning, yet his greatest youth aspiration was to become a professional baseball player. But baseball was not his way and, once forced to take note of it, he enrolled at New York University, where he studied film and television directing having, among others, Martin Scorsese as a teacher. After college, he married Janice, whom he met on a summer vacation, and returned to Long Island, where he made do for a while with alternate teaching positions. At the same time he began an honest career as a ‘stage’ comedian. A career that led him to move to Los Angeles in the mid-1970s, but which didn’t seem to have any particular spikes until Crystal was spotted by television producer Norman Lear. A meeting that for him represented a first turning point: thanks to Lear, he begins to appear on TV, thanks to Lear he gets the role of Jodie Dallas, the first openly gay television character in the soap opera “Soap”. A role that unleashes the arrows of the conservatives on him (which will force him to mitigate certain characterizations of the character), but which ultimately also gives him a certain notoriety that leads him to debut on the big screen in the film “Rabbit Test” by Joanne Rivers (1978). A film which, at least for the moment, no others follow. In fact, it returns to television and this time it is the imitations of Sammy Davis jr. and Fernando Lamas who gave him the favor of the public in the mid-1980s. And, at that point, he returns to be requested by the cinema, obviously mainly in comic roles, such as those played in “A perfect couple of nutters” or in “Throw your mom off the train”. In ’89 he co-starred, alongside Meg Ryan, in “Harry introduces you to Sally”, a sentimental comedy whose huge success represents for his career as a film actor, all in all belated, a definitive leap in quality and popularity. Later, he writes, directs and interprets “Mr. Sabato sera” (1992) and “Forget Paris” (1995), including his participation in “Scappo dalla città – la vita, amore, le cche” . Considered now a Hollywood star, he also takes away the luxury of appearing in the cast of Hamlet reinterpreted by Ken Branagh (“Hamlet” – 1996) and in that of “Harry is in pieces” by Woody Allen (1997). Moreover, throughout the 90s, Hollywood seems to be unable to do without him in what is its most important moment of celebration: the night of the Oscars, which Crystal is called to present as ‘host’ (presenter main), six times. That of 2000, which comes after the ‘break’ of ’99, is the seventh: as if to say that Billy Crystal, at the Academy Awards ceremony, is the host par excellence.
