BIOGRAPHY OF CAMERON CROWE
Music journalist turned director and screenwriter, Cameron Crowe has become famous for creating realistic and fun portraits of today’s young people. Born in Palm Springs but raised in San Diego, Crowe became a journalist at age 15, writing music reviews and articles for magazines such as Creem, Playboy and Penthouse. A year later he became a collaborator of ‘Rolling Stone’, later becoming its associate editor. During this period he interviews many rock legends, such as Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Led Zeppelin and Eric Clapton. At 22, he returns to school to research a book about the life of adolescents and the result is a best-seller that is adapted for the script of “Out of his head”. The film becomes almost a legend, not only for the realistic, sensitive and funny portrayal of the travails of teenagers, but also because it launches the careers of some Hollywood stars, such as Sean Penn, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Nicolas Cage. In 1989 Crowe continued exploiting his teenage streak with his directorial debut, “Not for Money … But for Love”, once again gaining acclaim for creating credible and thick characters at a time when most teen comedies were being played. they were based on sexual jokes and empty stereotypes. With his next work, “Singles, Love is a Game,” Crowe focuses on a group of Seattle youth in their twenties and their transition to adulthood. The film is not as well received as the previous one but, nonetheless, it highlights the good performance of choral acting of the cast, which includes Matt Dillon, Campbell Scott, Bridget Fonda. His greatest success reached him four years later, with “Jerry Maguire”, thanks to which in 1996 he also obtained the Oscar nomination for best original screenplay while Cuba Gooding Jr. won the Oscar for best supporting actor. “Jerry Maguire” represents the first step towards a study on the problems of a more adult age, although it has consonance with his previous works. The film is notable for the contemporary characterization of two subjects: the sports world and its rules and the love story. With “Almost Famous” Crowe brings to the stage a semi-autobiographical story: an aspiring teenager rock music journalist who has the great opportunity to follow an emerging rock band on tour and thus confirms his reputation as one of the most interesting new directors. With this film he won the Golden Globe and the 2000 Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. After making “Vanilla Sky” (2001), a Hollywood reinterpretation of the fantasy-existential drama “Open your eyes” by Alejandro Amenàbar, with Penélope Cruz (also interpreter of the Spanish film) and Tom Cruise, in 2005 he presented out of competition in Venice ” Elizabethtown, “an original post-teen comedy starring Orlando Bloom and Kirsten Dunst. In 2006 he was part of the jury of the 63rd Venice International Film Festival.
