CHARLIE CHAPLIN BIOGRAPHY
Director, actor, screenwriter, composer and producer. Sometimes also known as: Ch. Chaplin, Charles Chaplin, Sir Charles Chaplin. The son of Charles, a boy from the musical, who died of alcohol in 1894, and of Hanna, a nervous Jewish soubrette who spends long periods of internment in a house of care. He learned the first tricks of the trade from his mother and at the age of five he performed on stage for the first time in place of his mother who had lost her voice. At the age of eight he joined a folk dance group, the “Eight Lancashire Lads”. In 1907 his half-brother Sydney, to whom Chaplin is very close and with whom he shared the experience of abandonment, hunger and the first precarious insertions in the entertainment world, is hired in the famous company of Fred Karno and, after various insistence, manages to get Charlie hired who stays with them for a few years, touring England and even arriving in Paris and New York. It was here that in November 1913 he signed a contract with Mack Sennett for Keystone, thus leaving for Hollywood. In a few months he passes from the rank of shoulder to the role of protagonist, creating the character of the “vagabond” who will lead him to success. A skimpy dovetail jacket borrowed from Chester Cockline, a pair of oversized pants by Fatty Arbuckle, too-long shoes by Ford Sterling, a worn-out father-in-law’s bowler hat from Arbuckle, a fake mustache and a bamboo stick , thus “Charlot” was born. In 1914 he made 35 comedies for Keystone, in 1915 he signed for Essanay and made another 14 before moving to Mutual in 1916 with a contract for 16 shorts. Here comes the group with which he will make memorable ballet films: Edna Purviance is the female interpreter, Eric Campbell the partner-antagonist, other regular supporting actors and Rollie Totheroh as operator. In 1918 he obtained a contract from First National (later absorbed by Warner Bros.) for a million dollars to make eight films. In 1919 he founded United Artists with Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford and David Wark Griffith. His first feature film is “Il monello” (The Kid) of 1921 for which he probably took inspiration from the memories of his childhood. After a triumphal trip to Europe, he returned to the United States and from 1923 to 1947 he created a series of masterpieces in which the whole allegory of the conflict between the individual and the community emerges. In the first edition of the Oscar (1927/28) he received a special award for “the versatility and genius in writing, acting, directing and producing Il Circo (1928)”. In 1953 he was forced to return to Great Britain due to the McCarthyist persecution, given his attitudes in favor of communist artists. He settles in Vevey in Switzerland in a villa on Lake Geneva with his fourth wife, Oona O’Neill (daughter of playwright Eugene O’Neill) and their eight children. America’s relationship with Chaplin was always difficult also because of his love affairs and numerous scandals. His first wife, Mildred Harris, married in 1918, was only 16 years old while he was 28. Same age for his second wife: Lita Gray, married in 1924, when Chaplin was 35. At 44, in 1933, he married Paulette Goddard, only 19 years old. And even with his last wife, Oona, there are 36 years of difference. It seems that this passion for girls much younger than him was derived from the platonic relationship with the 16-year-old English actress Hetty Kelly, who died prematurely and with whom Chaplin was deeply in love. In 1964 he published his autobiography. In 1972 he returned to the United States to receive a special Lifetime Achievement Oscar awarded to him “For the incalculable contribution made to the transformation of cinema into the art of our century”. In 1975, in London, the queen appointed him a baronet. He died in his sleep on December 25, 1977, in his villa in Vevey. He is buried in the Corsier Sur cemetery
