BIOGRAPHY OF CONSTANTIN COSTA-GAVRAS
Film director. A witty, politically (and polemically) committed author, he is the son of a state official accused of communist sympathies. This is why he cannot emigrate to the United States (as he would like to do) or enroll in university. At 18 he decided to go to Paris where he first graduated in Literature, then enrolled at the Institut des Hautes Etudes Cinématographiques (IDHEC). After having worked as a film critic and as assistant director to René Clair, René Clèment and Jacques Demy, he made his debut behind the camera in 1965 with the thriller ‘Sleeping wagon for murderers’. After having recorded a half failure with ‘The thirteenth man’ (1966), he achieved success in 1969 with ‘Z’, a film in which he used the techniques of the thriller to explicitly condemn the ‘Regime of the Colonels’ at the time in power in Greece. The film won the Special Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival (1969) and the Academy Award for best foreign film (1970). Combining the thriller with the militant commitment, with ‘Z’ Costa-Gavras inaugurates a trend that he will fully exploit in the following years, denouncing military regimes from all over the world. In 1973, after the release of ‘L’amerikano’ – on the situation in Uruguay – he was denounced in the United States for “anti-Americanism” and accused of openly supporting terrorism. After a brief excursion into the sentimental genre (‘Chiaro di donna’, 1979), at the beginning of the Eighties Costa-Gavras lands in Hollywod with a new film of denunciation: ‘Missing – Scomparso’ (1982), with which he wins the Palme d’Or in Cannes and an Oscar for the screenplay but which cost him a new chapter of legal misadventures. In this battle, however, the director is backed by actors Jack Lemmon and Sissy Spacek. In 1983, for ‘Hanna K’, he was accused of being overly pro-Palestinian. In subsequent films – including ‘Betrayed – Tradita’ (1988), Costa-Gavras continues his journey into committed cinema, albeit with a more subdued incisiveness and passion than in the past. In 1989 he made one of his most intense and courageous films, ‘Music box’, with Jessica Lange. The actress and the film both received awards at the Berlin Film Festival. During his career Costa-Gavras was also an actor: he starred alongside Simone Signoret in ‘Madame Rosa’ (1977), a film that won the Oscar for best foreign film.
