BIOGRAPHY OF DANIEL BRÜHL
Daniel Brühl, whose full name – very long – it is Daniel César Martín Brühl González Domingo, was born in Barcelona on June 16, 1978, from Papa Hanno (television director) and mother a Spanish teacher who didn’t trust German hospitals. Shortly after his birth, however, the family returned to Germany and settled in Cologne, where the young Daniel attended school, incubating the acting virus that had infected him at a very young age.
His professional debut comes in 1995, when he joins the cast of the German soap opera Verbotene Liebe, and marks the beginning of numerous locally produced series and television films. The film debut is dated 1999, when Daniel appears in the film Schlaraffenland of Friedmann Fromm, and soon, with films like Nichts bereuen, Das weisse Rauschen is Vaya with Dios, start collecting prizes and nominations at the German and Bavarian Film Awards.
The success, the real and international one, however, arrives in 2003, when Daniel Brühl is the protagonist of the comedy of Wolfgang Becker Good Bye, Lenin!, in which he plays the role of a boy who, in order to avoid trauma to his mother who wakes up from a coma when the Berlin Wall no longer exists and Germany has been reunited, must pretend that none of this has happened. The film of Becker, awarded all over the world, it is worth prizes to its protagonist at home and to the European Film Awards, and opens the doors of European and Hollywood cinema: thanks to the fact that he speaks numerous languages, including English and French, in addition to his native German, Spanish and Catalan, Daniel debuts in an English-language film in 2004, when it reads in Ladies in Lavender, while in the 2005 is on the set of Joyeux Noël – A truth forgotten by history, directed by the French Christian Carion. In 2006 plays the role of the protagonist, a Catalan anarchist executed during Francoism, in the award-winning Salvador – 26 years against, and subsequently recites for Julie Delpy in 2 days in Paris. And just in that period, coincidence or not, it separates from Jessica Schwarz, actress with whom he had been engaged for a long time.
In 2007 is on the set of The Bourne Ultimatum – Return of the Jackal, while in the 2009, after acting again for the Delpy neither The Countess, is called by Quentin Tarantino in the cast of Inglourious Basterds, as First Class Soldier Frederick Zoller.
For the Spanish film Eva, in 2011 Brühl is appointed to the Goya for the second time after Salvador, and in the same year he works for the third time with Delpy in 2 days in New York.
We thus arrive at 2013, the year in which Daniel Brühl is chosen by Ron Howard to play the role of Nicky Lauda in Rush, the film that tells the rivalry between the Austrian driver and the British James Hunt: a part that earns him nominations for the BAFTA, ai Golden Globe and ai Screen Actors Guild Awards and ai Critic’s Choice Awards (a poker only successful for colleagues like Leonardo DiCaprio, Tilda Swinton, Marion Cotillard, Emma Thompson, Tom Hanks is Jake Gyllenhaal).
In the same year, he also plays Daniel Domscheit-Berg, an important former collaborator of WikiLeaks, in The fifth power, film about the history of Julian Assange.
More recently, we’ve seen it in movies like The Spy – A Most Wanted Man is The taste of success, as well as in the cinecomic Marvel Captain America: Civil War, in which he plays the supervillain Baron Zemo and which opens the door to the most fruitful trend of contemporary Hollywood cinema.
We will soon see him alongside Emma Watson in the drama Colony, and of Jessica Chastain in The Zookeeper’s Wife, adaptation of the novel by Diane Ackerman “Jews at the Warsaw Zoo” which will be directed by Niki Caro.
