BIOGRAPHY OF DANNY DEVITO
Actor, director and producer, DeVito began his career as a beautician in his sister’s beauty salon; to gain experience he decides to enroll at the Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York, soon discovering that his vocation is acting. He devotes himself a lot to the theater, but also gets small roles in cinema and television series. In 1971 he had a small part in the film “La mortadella”, by Monicelli alongside Sophia Loren and Gigi Proietti and three years later he got his first real role playing Martini in the film adaptation of “Someone flew over the cuckoo’s nest”, a role he had already had the opportunity to play on stage. The film is produced by Michael Douglas, at the suggestion of his father Kirk, who had already tried to play him on stage. The fame, however, comes thanks to the award-winning television series “Taxi” (1978-1983), with the role of the petulant director Louie, and in the following decade De Vito worked in numerous successful comedies including “In pursuit of the green stone” with Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner, followed by “The Jewel of the Nile”, “Please Kill My Wife” with Bette Midler, “Throw Mom from the Train” with Billy Crystal, who is also directed by “Gemini” with Schwarzenegger and again with the Douglas-Turner couple “The War of the Roses”, also present this time in the double role of actor and director. In the 90s, De Vito’s activity included acting and directing as well as production, through his production company Jersey Films, which included among its successful products films such as “Pulp Fiction”, “Gattaca”, “Out of sight “. De Vito has also given convincing proofs of dramatic talent, in “Hoffa, saint or mafia?”, “LA Confidential”, “The rain man”, “The garden of virgins suicides” and “Man on the moon”, films biographical about the life of Andy Kaufman, the artist who died prematurely in 1984 from cancer, who was his colleague in the series “Taxi”. He has been married since 1982 to actress Rhea Perlman, with whom he has three children.
