BIOGRAPHY OF DANTE FERRETTI
Set designer. Born in Macerata in 1943, he attended the artistic high school in Rome, then the Academy of Fine Arts. He made his debut working at Pasolini’s “Medea” in 1969. The collaboration between the two continued until the director’s death: Ferretti took care of the scenography of the “Decameron”, “Tales of Canterbury”, “The flower of a thousand and one nights” and “Salò or the hundred days of Sodom”. After having worked with Petri, Comencini and Ferreri, in 1979 he began working with Fellini (“Orchestra Test”). On the set of “The City of Women” he meets Martin Scorsese who hires him for “The Age of Innocence” (1993), “Casino” (1995), “Kundun” (1997) and “Gangs of New York” (2002) ). His wife Francesca Lo Schiavo collaborates with all these films with equal success as an interior designer for which the couple lives mainly in the USA. However, Ferretti’s fame had spread beyond the borders of Italy already from “Il nome della rosa” (1986) for which he won the David di Donatello. He received six Oscar nominations, (“Gangs of New York”, “Kundun”, “Interview with the Vampire”, “The Age of Innocence”, “Hamlet” “The Adventures of the Baron of Munchausen”) before winning. for “The Aviator” in 2005 together with his wife Francesca Lo Schiavo for furniture. In 2007 Ferretti was awarded the Silver Ribbon for the scenographies of “The Black Dahlia” by Brian De Palma. In 2008, together with his wife, he repeats the victory of the Oscar with the settings of “Sweeney Todd – The diabolical barber of Fleet Street” by Tim Burton.
