BIOGRAPHY OF DAVID CRONENBERG
Film director. The son of a journalist-writer, and a pianist, both of Jewish origin, he graduated in English literature from the University of Toronto after abandoning his studies at the Science Department. Since he was a child he has written short stories full of mystery and already plays classical guitar at the age of 12. He is considered the absolute master of a mutant and visionary cinema, defined as a “depraved, a ruler of venereal horror, a blood-loving baron”. After an apprenticeship in short films and softcore, he launched into the horror genre in 1975 (after a stay in France for some television work) making a commercial film “The demon under the skin”, where a parasite spreads, taking possession of the bodies and canceling their rationality in favor of instinct. In 1976 follows “Rabid blood thirst” in which the director tells of an epidemic transmitted by a bite. In “Brood – The Maleficent Brood” (1978), he transforms the fear of procreation into dark horror images. He gained the attention of critics and the public with “Scanners” (1979), where people with exceptional telepathic powers are able to cause their interlocutors to explode. In 1982 follows “Videodrome” which closes the first phase of his career and in 1983 “The dead zone”, based on the novel by Stephen King. In 1986 he directed a remake of a science fiction film from the 1950s by Kurt Neuman “The Fly”. This is the work that will lead the director to international success. The film wins the Oscar for special effects. In 1996 Cronenberg won the Special Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival with “Crash” and in ’99 the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival with “eXistenz”. In most of his films, the costumes are done by his sister Denise.
