BIOGRAPHY OF EDDIE FISHER

Pop singer, actor. He was born to Kate Winokue and Joseph Fisher, a Russian Jewish couple who immigrated to America. Fourth of seven children, since the years of high school he discovers his singing skills and begins to perform in various amateur festivals, winning several prizes. Launched by Philadelphia radio, he soon became a local celebrity and decided to drop out of school to pursue his dream of becoming a singer. In 1949 Eddie Cantor saw him perform together with the group of Buddy Morrow and Charlie Ventura and invited him to participate in one of his radio programs. The immediate success leads him to sign a record deal with RCA. The following year he tried the cinema experience playing one of the impresarios in the film “Eve against Eve”, but the scenes in which he appeared were cut during the editing phase. Recalled to arms, in 1951 – after a period of training in Texas – he was sent to Korea where he soon joined the United States Army Band, the traveling musical ensemble that tried to brighten the mood of the soldiers engaged at the front. After his leave, he resumes performing in night clubs and in short, while his songs climb the hits, he begins to be a regular guest on many TV shows, from the “Perry Como Show” to the “Chesterfield Supper Club”, until in 1957 – at the peak of popularity, idol of American teenagers – he is offered the conduct of “The Eddie Fisher Show”. Meanwhile, the previous year, he returned to the cinema alongside his wife, actress Debbie Reynolds, married in 1955, in Norman Taurog’s musical “A Whirlwind of Joy”. In 1959, after four years of marriage and two children – future actors Carrie and Todd Fisher – he divorced Reynolds to marry Elizabeth Taylor, the widow of one of his closest friends, Michael Todd, who died the previous year in a plane crash. The new love story has a strong media coverage and causes a serious scandal that leads the two actresses to transform from great friends into rivals, only to forget what happened and mock the singer years later in the TV movie “These Old Broads” by Matthew Diamond. In that same year she returned to the big screen to play an uncredited role in “Suddenly Last Summer” by Joseph L. Mankiewicz, for which Taylor won the Golden Globe for Best Actress. In 1960 he was again alongside his wife in the drama “Venere in visone” by Daniel Mann and in the same year he broke his contract with RCA and founded his own record label, Ramrod Records, to then sign an exclusive with the company. In 1964 he also divorced Taylor with whom he broke off all relations for about forty years, and three years later he married another actress, Connie Stevens, with whom he remained until 1969 and with whom he has two daughters, Joely and Tricia Leigh, both actresses .
