BIOGRAPHY OF EMANUELE CRIALESE
Film director. Romano went to live in New York where he graduated in 1995 from the Film Department of the Tish School of the Arts, the most prestigious faculty of cinema and theater in the United States. He made his directorial debut two years later, again in the United States, with “Once We Were Strangers”, a feature film in English he also wrote and produced which participates in competition at the 1998 ‘Sundance Film Festival’. he is accepted in the competitive section of the Festival directed by Robert Redford. Between 1998 and 2000 Crialese also worked in the theater, again in the United States. In 1999 with the producer Bob Chartoff (the same of “Raging Bull” and “New York New York”) he collaborated in the drafting of a film treatment on Ellis Island. But success comes with “Respiro” (2002), a feature film shot in the summer of 2001 on the island of Lampedusa with Valeria Golino and some young islanders. In the role of Grazia, the protagonist, Valeria Golino wins the Nastro D’Argento 2003 and gets the nomination for David 2003 together with the film and cinematographer Fabio Zamarion and the producer Domenico Procacci who gets the Award. After winning the 2003 Cannes Critics’ Prize, the film was released a second time in theaters. In 2006 his “Mondonuovo” (2005) was selected to compete for the Oscar as best foreign film.
