BIOGRAPHY OF FERNANDEL

Actor. The son of an amateur actor, he was born in a public building at 72 Boulevard Chave, a major thoroughfare in Marseille. He made his stage debut at just five years old. According to some relatives, he is a curious child, fundamentally honest, unstable, extremely sensitive, sometimes melancholy but much more often jovial and playful. In 1912 he made his debut in a theater in a neighborhood hall with a historical drama, ‘Marcel ou les enfants de la révolution ‘. But it is in a small room in the nearby district of Castellane that he meets the audience and the first applause thanks to his impromptu but much appreciated interpretation of ‘Mademoiselle Rose’. The interpretations are interrupted abruptly when the father forces him to find a job. After compulsory schooling, in 1915, the young man found a job as a messenger, for 25 francs a month, at the Banque Nationale du Crédit. Here he knows what will become his best friend: Jean Manse. He then changed several jobs until, together with his father just returned from the war, he worked with him in the food sector. He is a longshoreman before returning to work in the bank again. Meanwhile, he starts dating Jean’s younger sister, Henriette, who will soon become his girlfriend. It is said that her stage name was coined by her sister-in-law, who one day announced it with a shrill voice: “Voici le Fernand d’Elle”. He married Henriette in 1925 and soon after accepted a job in the horseshoe soap factory. Meanwhile, thanks to his friend and writer Marcel Pagnol, he begins to tread more and more assiduously the scenes. After leaving his job, he made his debut as a character actor at the ‘Caffè Concerto’, then landed in the operetta where he interpreted, among others, ‘Ignace’ and ‘Le Chasseur d’images’. At the beginning of the thirties he became a typical comedy actor and landed in the cinema, where he made his debut with a small part in ‘Le blanc et le noir’ (1931). He begins to get noticed by the general public with a dramatic interpretation in ‘Madame Husson’s Rose Garden’ (1932). Alternating works in films by Maurice Tourneur, Maurice Cammarge, Christian-Jacque, Marcel Pagnol and Julien Duvivier with interpretations in dozens of commercial comedy films, gradually acquires an international reputation becoming the symbol of French comedy in the world. In the fifties this fame is destined to grow thanks to his successful participation in the series of films dedicated to the eternal struggle of a parish priest of a village in the lower Emilia region (Fernandel, in fact) struggling with a communist mayor (played by Gino Cervi). The first two films in the series (‘Don Camillo’ and ‘The Return of Don Camillo’) date back to 1952 and are both signed by Julien Duvivier, based on Giovannino Guareschi’s stories. Others signed by various directors will follow until the last film, in 1965, directed by Luigi Comencini. During the Second World War he also dedicated himself to directing, with far from exciting results, signing ‘Simplet’ (1942) and ‘Adrien’ (1943). A third direction is from 1957, ‘Adhémar or the toy of fatality’. At the end of his career he devoted himself to production, founding the ‘Gaber Film’ in 1963 with Jean Gabin. He dies in Paris after a long illness. He was buried in the exclusive ‘Passy’ cemetery, also in the French capital.
