BIOGRAPHY OF GABRIEL BYRNE
Actor. The first of six children, he grew up receiving a Catholic education under the influence of the ‘Irish Christian Brothers’. He spends five years of his childhood in a seminary thinking he has the vocation to become a priest. However, this will not be the case; even, he comes to the conclusion that he absolutely does not believe in God. He then attends University College Dublin where he studies archeology and linguistics and also becomes a great expert in the ancient Irish language, Gaelic, and shines as a football player in the Stella Maris Football Club Once he graduated, he worked as an archaeologist without ever neglecting his passion for his language, so much so that he wrote a play, ‘Draíocht’. This is the first Gaelic drama to be shown on Irish national television on TG4. The passion for acting took over later, at the age of 29, starting first to attend the Focus Theater and the Abbey Theater in Dublin, then the Royal Court Theater and the Royal National Theater in London. He first made his debut as a television actor, finally arriving in the cinema in 1981 with “Excalibur”, by John Boorman, in the role of ‘Lord Uther Pendragon’. At the same time, he never definitively leaves TV or the stage, receiving numerous awards for his brilliant performances, such as the Golden Globe for best actor in the TV series “In Treatment” (2008), by Rodolfo García. He sets foot in America only at the age of 37. Of his best roles, how can we forget: “Giulia and Giulia” (1987), by Peter del Monte, with whom he starts his collaboration with Italian cinema which he will also find in “Canone inverso – Making Love” (1999), by Ricky Tognazzi ; “Crossroads of Death” (1990), directed by the Cohen brothers; her minor character in “Little Women” (1994), by Gillian Armstrong, a film adaptation of the timeless literary classic; “The Usual Suspects” (1995), by Bryan Singer, in which he plays the protagonist, and “The Vanity Fair” (2004), by Mira Nair. In 1988 he married Ellen Barkin, with whom he had two children. After a period of separation, they finally divorced in 1999. “Amarcord” (1973), by Federico Fellini, is one of his favorite films.
