BIOGRAPHY OF JAMES CAAN
Actor and director. Son of Arthur and Sophie Caan, managers of a Kosher butcher shop in Queens, New York. He attends law and history courses at the University of Michigan where, thanks to his handsome physique, he plays on the football team and excels in various sports. He begins acting at the Sanford Meisner Neighborhood Playhouse and later takes lessons from Wynn Handman. In the early 60s he made his Broadway debut and soon arrived in Hollywood. His first film appearance is with a small, uncredited role in Billy Wilder’s “Irma la dolce” (1963), followed by performances on the big and small screen often in villains. The turning point in his career takes place thanks to the meeting with Francis Ford Coppola who entrusts him first with the role of ‘Killer’ in “I’m not going home tonight” (1969) and then that of Sonny Corleone in the first two episodes of the saga of “Il Godfather “(1972 and 1974). It is thanks to this interpretation that he was nominated in 1972 for the Oscar as best supporting actor. In 1981 he made his debut behind the camera with “I will find them at any cost”, but the film did not achieve the hoped-for success, and in the mid-80s he retired from the scene due to personal problems. It is again thanks to Coppola that he finds the acclaim of audiences and critics with his performance in “Giardini di pietra” (1987), consensus confirmed in 1990 with the role of the writer Paul Sheldon – hostage of the psychopathic fan Annie / Kathy Bates (who for this film he wins the Oscar) – in “Misery must not die” by Brett Rattner. Away from the set he dedicates himself to various activities including the breeding of racehorses and has never given up sporting activity. He is a black belt in Karate and for several years he has participated in ‘rodeos’ around the United States (his nickname is Jewish Cowboy). He has been married four times and has five children including Scott Caan (born from his marriage to model and actress Sheila Ryan), who followed in her father’s footsteps.
