BIOGRAPHY OF JAMES CROMWELL
Actor. Son of director John Cromwell, he studied drama at Carnegie-Mellon University. He began his career as a stage actor by experimenting with everything from classic Shakespearean texts to experimental performances. Later, he landed first on the small screen in the well-known series “Arcibaldo” (1974), then to the cinema in the film “Invito a cena con delitto” (1976), by Robert Moore. Starting from the nineties, his character linked to the most famous pig in the world, ‘Babe’, became known. He stars throughout the saga and Chris Noonan’s “Babe, Brave Pig” (1995) also earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He then worked on the very famous “Star Trek – First Contact” (1996), signed by Jonathan Frakes. Even his corrupt police captain ‘Dudley Smith’ of “LA Confidential” (1997), by Curtis Hanson, was much appreciated, so much so that many spoke of the missing Oscar. He has played the role of an American president four times, both for television and cinema, as in “At the top of tension” (2002), by Phil Alden Robinson, or in “W.” (2008) by Oliver Stone. How not to mention, then, his performance in the award-winning silent film “The Artist” (2011), by Michel Hazanavicius. Strange but true, he had quite a few problems due to his height, so much so that in various films he appears, most of the time, sitting or bent over in the act of doing something. He was married twice and got divorced in both cases and has three children. He is a great progressive political activist and was arrested in 2001 during a PETA demonstration in favor of animal rights.
