BIOGRAPHY OF JEAN-CLAUDE BRIALY
Actor and director. One of the main protagonists of the Nouvelle Vague, but also of the French theater scene and Parisian social life. The son of a colonel, in his infancy following his father’s destinations, he completed his studies in various French locations up to Strasbourg, where he enrolled at the Conservatoire and the Center d’Art Dramatique de l’Est. Attending the theatrical environment he meets Jean Marais who encourages him to pursue his career in the entertainment world. During his military service, he is called by the army film detachment to read the comments on the documentaries, an experience that continues even after leaving the uniform. In 1954 he moved to Paris where he came into contact with the group of critics and directors that belonged to the Cahiers du Cinéma and which gave birth to the Nouvelle Vague movement. The big screen debut took place in 1956 with the short films “Le coup du berger” by Jean Rivette (which also featured Claude Chabrol, Jean-Luc Godard and François Truffaut) and “The sonata a Kreutzer” by Eric Rohmer. After other minor appearances, in 1958 he achieved notoriety thanks to Chabrol who chose him to interpret his first two feature films, “Le beau Serge” and “The cousins”, in which his personality as a cynical and aggressive Parisian is outlined. Since then he has worked in over 180 films giving excellent proofs not only in dramatic roles but also putting himself in evidence as an interpreter of brilliant comedies with an easy and witty acting and collaborating with the most famous directors, not only French, of the second postwar period: Jean -Luc Godard, Eric Rohmer, Roger Vadim, François Truffaut, Julien Duvivier, Philippe de Broca, Bertrand Travernier, Mauro Bolognini, Florestano Vancini, Alberto Lattuada, Ettore Scola, Luis Buñuel and Costa Gavras. Since 1971 he also tries his hand at directing, making films for the big and small screen – in some cases even as a screenwriter – the first of which is “Églantine” which earned him the silver shell at the San Sebastián Festival . Despite his cinematic success, he never left the stage – he was the owner of the “Les Bouffes Parisiens” theater in Paris – and also continued his television career. In 2007 he starred in the film “Les sapins bleus”, a film still in post-production at the time of the actor’s death at the age of 74 following a long illness.
