BIOGRAPHY OF JEAN-LUC GODARD
Director, screenwriter, actor. Born in Paris into a wealthy family, the father is a doctor and owns a clinic, the mother comes from a wealthy family of Swiss bankers. During the Second World War Jean-Luc was sent to study in Switzerland, and only returned to Paris in 1948. After high school he enrolled at the Sorbonne and attended courses in ethnology. At the university he became friends with François Truffaut, Eric Rohmer, Jaques Rivette and together with the latter he founded the “Gazette du cinéma”, on which he published articles under the pseudonym of “Hans Lucas”. After some cinematographic experiments conducted with Rivette, he made a documentary, entitled “Opération Beton” (1954) on the construction of a dam in Switzerland. The documentary will be followed by some short films, including “Tous le garçon s’appellent Patrick” (1957) and “Histoire d’eau” (1958). In 1959, he directed the first film, “Until the last breath”, for which he obtained the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival. The film also becomes the emblem of the Nouvelle Vague, which Rohmer, Malle and Truffaut help to grow. In the same year he married actress Anna Karina. In 1960 he directed “Le petit soldat”, which arouses controversy in France due to references to the war in Algeria. Followed by “La donna è donna” (1962), also this Silver Bear in Berlin, “The seven deadly sins” (1961), “This is my life” (1962) and “Contempt” (1963), inspired to the novel by Alberto Moravia. In 1964 he founded, together with his wife, a production company, “Anouchka Films”. The couple divorced in 1967. After the science fiction film “Agent Lemmy Caution, mission Alphavillle” (1965) which won the Golden Bear in Berlin, Godard moved on to political and social criticism with “The Chinese” (1967), by starring actress Anne Wiazemsky, whom she marries during the making of the film, and with “Week – end, a man and a woman from Saturday to Sunday” (1967). After moving to Grenoble for a while, the director begins traveling across the United States, from New York to Berkeley in California, to shoot “One American Movie”, which was never completed. He propagates the student protest with some unfinished or clandestinely distributed films, including “The gay science” (1968) and “Lotte in Italia” (1970). Later he was entrusted with one of the episodes of “Amore e rabbia” (1967) – otherwise known as “Vangelo 70” – in which Marco Bellocchio and Pier Paolo Pasolini also participate. In 1979 she divorced for the second time. In 1982 he shoots “Passion”, the following year it is the turn of “Prenom Carmen”, Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, and in 1987 he tries his hand at “King Lear”. In 1990 he shoots “Nouvelle Vague” with Alain Delon and six years later he returns to Venice where he presents “Forever Mozart”.
