Jerry continued his performance in Catskill Mountain resorts and local clubs until an appearance on an HBO special by Rodney Dangerfield boosted his career in 1976. After his first successful spot on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson (1962), his career took off. After that were his appearances on various shows. He appeared on the Frankie on Benson (1979) sitcom four times, but the show abruptly fired him. An invitation to create a sitcom for NBC in 1989 became his opportunity.
