JoJo Siwa is about to make television history.
The triple-threat YouTube phenomenon will become the first celebrity to be part of a same-sex couple on Dancing With the Stars.
ABC announced during the Television Critics Association press tour on Thursday (August 26) that the former Dance Moms will be entering her 30th season this fall with Olympic gold medalist Suni Lee of the U.S. gymnastics team. Siwa, who is queer and pansexual, will team up with a professional dancer, marking the very first such couple in the history of the show.
“I think it breaks a wall that has never been destroyed before,” Siwa told Good Morning America of her upcoming DWTS experience. also you can dance with whoever you want to dance with. I think it’s really special. “
Siwa noted that despite her excitement, she and her yet to be revealed dance partner will have many unique challenges to overcome.
“The [are] a lot of barriers that we will have to cross, “admitted the singer-dancer-actress.” Who’s in charge? How do you dress? What shoes are you wearing? But I think it’s something I’m looking forward to. “
Siwa also shared that the producers emailed her asking if she wanted to be on the show and she said yes before seeing them ask her if she preferred a male or female dance partner because they knew Siwa had dated as a gay earlier this year.
“It would be so amazing, it would mean so much to me – and I think so much to a lot of people around the world – if I partnered with another woman,” Siwa explained. “So right away, it wasn’t a question.”
The Dancing With the Stars Season 30 premiere airs on ABC on September 20 at 8 p.m. ET.
