Continuing President Joe Biden’s election promise of a diverse staff at the White House, Deputy Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre made history yesterday (May 26) by becoming the first openly gay woman to hold a point press release at the White House. Additionally, she also became the first black woman to give a briefing in over 30 years.
“It is a real honor to be here today,” said Jean-Pierre in his opening speech. “It’s clear that the President thinks representation matters and I appreciate him giving me this opportunity.

Jean-Pierre’s colleague, White House press secretary Jen Psaki, took to Twitter to congratulate Jean-Pierre on his historic achievement.

Karine Jean-Pierre, 43, was born in Haiti and has a long history of working in the Democratic Party. In 2008, she initially campaigned for former Senator John Edwards before joining the Obama campaign. After Obama’s election, she served as regional policy director in the White House’s Bureau of Political Affairs. In the 2020 campaign, Jean-Pierre also made headlines when she physically restrained a deranged animal rights activist who attempted to attack Kamala Harris during a MoveOn.org debate.
