Kat Von D has always been known primarily for her visual work as a renowned tattoo artist and beauty guru, but she’s also a musician, and her debut album Love Made Me Do It is in the works. In an interview with Loudwire Nights, she explained how a strain of toxic relationships and celibacy impacted the record.
“My kryptonite has always been love. I think about everything else, I feel in control and I find extreme joy in it,” said Von D. “Before Rafael [Reyes], I was only in dysfunctional relationships. “
The artist explained that neither of his exes shared similar physical attributes, but rather emotional ones.
“I don’t have a type. My type was like, I guess you could say daddy’s issues,” she said with a laugh. “For some reason I dated a lot of guys who had a lot of quitting issues, and that would affect how they dealt with who they dated.”
Von D finally realized that the toxic relationship pattern she was in could help her look within and try to understand why she was looking for men with these particular issues.
“That’s when I took about, at one point, three years of celibacy where I was like, ‘I’m not going to date anybody, I’m not going to be intimate with whoever I am. whatever and really focus on myself because I’m tired of seeing the same movie over and over again. These things have to happen, ”she explained.
So much of the album was written from a place of heartache and struggle with relationships – especially the song “Enough”.
“When I wrote these songs, I wasn’t writing with the intention that anyone else would listen except the person I wrote them for. So it was easy to be vulnerable and honest,” he said. she continued. “There is a lot of wrong there, I think a lot of people, unfortunately, can relate to feeling that they are not good enough for someone.”
“If these songs make someone feel less alone, that’s pretty great.”
Love Made Me Do It will arrive on August 26th and can be pre-ordered here now.
