BIOGRAPHY OF KIRK DOUGLAS
Actor, director and producer. Only son, with seven sisters, of Jacob and Channa Danielovitch, a couple of Russian Jewish immigrants. To support his studies he worked as a waiter, graduating from St. Lawrence University and then attending the American Academy of Dramatic Art. His first stage name is Isidore Demsky. He made his Broadway debut in 1941, but abandoned the scenes for military service in the United States Navy. He returns to acting on the stage and on the radio when Paramount offers him the lead role in Lewis Milestone’s The Strange Love of Martha Ivers. Magnetic gaze and handsome physique (he was a wrestler), good at brilliant comedy, excellent in interpreting rough or tormented characters, he passes with ease from drama to political film, from westerns to historical films, from thrillers to science fiction. Considered almost a despot on the set, he has quarreled with many of the directors he has worked with, sometimes going so far as to replace them behind the camera. In 1955 he founded his own independent production company making many important films. In 1973 he made his directorial debut with “Un magnificent ceffo da galera” (Scalawag) and then repeated in ’75 with “I Giustizieri del West” (Posse). He also worked in Italy, with Mario Camerini for “Ulisse” in 1954, with Michele Lupo for “A man to respect” in 1972 and with Alberto De Martino for “Holocaust 2000” in 1978. He has often worked in tandem with Burt Lancaster and in the cinema and in the theater. He married twice: to Diana Dill in 1943 with whom he had two children, Michael (famous actor) and Joel (owner of the Victorine film studios in Nice) and to Anne Buydens in 1954, with whom he had two other children, Peter (producer) and Eric (actor). He wrote an autobiography, “The ragman’s son”, and two novels: “Dance with the davil” and “The secret”. In 1981 he received the Medal of Freedom from President Reagan and in 1995 an Oscar for Lifetime Achievement. Struck by a stroke in the same year he managed to recover a language deficit so much that he was able to engage in a social campaign in favor of linguistic integration of immigrants. .
