BIOGRAPHY OF LEONARD BERNSTEIN
Composer, his father, a Russian Jew, emigrated to the United States at the turn of the century. Nicknamed Lennie, he studies at Boston Latin School and Harvard University. He takes music courses at the Curtis Institute and the Berkshire Music Center. From 1943 to 1944 he was deputy director of the New York Philharmonic. From 1945 to 1948 he was director of the New York Symphony. From 1948 to 1949 he was a musical consultant for the Israel Philharmonic. In 1948 he became a member of the Berkshire Music Center and later director. From 1951 to 1958 he was professor of music at Brandeis University. In 1958 he was director of the New York Philharmonic. In 1953 he was conductor of the Scala in Milan. Active for the cinema only on a few occasions. He died in 1990 of a heart attack.
