BIOGRAPHY OF LEONARDO DI COSTANZO
Director, documentary maker. He was born in Ischia in 1958. He graduated from the Oriental Institute of Naples and moved to Paris where he attended the direction seminars of the Ateliers Varan. He works for French television and makes various documentaries. In 1991 he participated in the collective work “Premières Vues” with the short film “In the name of the Pope”. He joined the Ateliers pedagogical team and in 1994, together with the Cambodian director Rithy Panh, founded a training center for documentary makers in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. In 2000 he created an Atelier Varan at the University of Bogotà. He directed “Prove di Stato” (1998), on the determination of Luisa Bossa, former high school principal, elected mayor of Herculaneum in 1995, after Mani Pulite. In 2003, with a minimal troupe, he resumed an entire school year in a school in a suburb of Naples, re-qualifying “A scuola” which is presented at the Venice Film Festival. In 2006 with “Odessa”, together with the co-creator Bruno Oliviero, he won the prize for best direction at the fifth edition of the Infinity Festiival in Alba in the section ‘A new look’. In 2007 on the proposal of Agostino Ferrente and Mario Tronco, the creators of the Orchestra di Piazza Vittorio, the multi-ethnic complex born in Rome in the Esquilino district, made one of the documentaries dedicated to musicians. He dealt with Houcine, following him in his homeland, Tunisia, in “The Orchestra of Piazza Vittorio: The Return journals”.
