BIOGRAPHY OF LUIS BUÑUEL
Director and screenwriter. After the first years spent in the small Aragonese town where he was born, Luis was sent to Zaragoza to a Jesuit college where he was educated according to strict rules. He then enrolled at the University of Madrid where he became friends with Salvador Dalì and Federico García Lorca and graduated in Literature in 1924. The following year he married Jeanne Rucar and left for Paris where his first cinematographic experiment took place, the direct short film. together with Salvador Dalì entitled “An Andalusian dog” (1929). In it already emerge the characteristics of his cinema, the brutal visual impact and the anti-bourgeois spirit. In 1930 the first film “The Golden Age” confirms the attack on the bourgeoisie. The protest reactions even raise fears for his career. The film is banned by the prefect immediately after its release (it was released again only in 1950 in New York and in 1951 in Paris). Following the civil war, the director is forced to emigrate to New York, where he finds a job at the Museum of Modern Art dealing with the direction of the Spanish dubbing of American films. He moved to Mexico in 1940 and took Mexican citizenship in 1948. He was awarded as best director at the 1951 Cannes Film Festival for the film “The Children of Violence” (1950). Seven years later he reconfirmed his success in Cannes, in 1958 with “Nazarín”, and in 1961 with “Viridiana” but after winning the Palme d’Or, the film was accused of blasphemy. It is his way of responding to the invitation addressed to him by the dictator Francisco Franco to return to his homeland and resume his work. Followed by “The exterminating angel” (1962), “Diary of a waitress” (1963) and “Bella di giorno” (1967) for which she won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. Two Oscar nominations followed for the screenplay of “The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie” (1972), one of his most famous films, and for “Quell’oscuro Object of Desire” (1977). He is also the author of “Obra literaria”, a collection of literary writings, and in 1981 he wrote his autobiography which will be published after his death two years later.
