BIOGRAPHY OF MATTEO GARRONE

Son of a theater critic and a photographer, Matteo Garrone was born in Rome on October 15, 1968. Very good in sports, he dreams of becoming a tennis champion, but an accident forces him to hang up his racket and pursue a different career. After graduating from art school in 1986, the future director works as an assistant operator, then he devotes himself to painting. In 1996 he signed the short film Silhouette and won the Sacher Festival organized by Nanni Moretti. At this point his artistic destiny is sealed and, the following year, Garrone makes the short one of the three episodes of his first feature film, which is titled Middle Earth and it’s a collage of immigration stories in Rome. His effort was rewarded and the Cinemagiovani festival in Turin awarded him the Special Jury Prize. Soon Matteo shoots in New York, together with Carlo Cresto-Dina, the documentary on the Movimento Pentecostale Bienvenido espirito santo. In 1998, however, he directed both the documentary Oreste Pipolo, wedding photographer who short film The case of force majeure, made together with Massimo Gaudioso and Fabio Nunziata. From the same year it is Guests, his second feature film, which follows the events of two young Albanians living in Rome.

Already in this first tests, Matteo Garrone he defines his method of making cinema: small crew, live sound, frequent use of the hand-held camera and actors who are often not professional or in any case not too well known. In 2000 the director made Roman Summer, which pays homage to the underground theater season of the 1970s and shows the “eternal city” grappling with preparatory work for the Jubilee. The film is included in the programming of the Venice Film Festival in the Cinema del Presente section and, while allowing audiences and critics to acquire some familiarity with Garrone’s work, it does not leave its mark like the following The embalmer (2002), which is affected by Matteo’s pictorial training and at the same time embraces genre cinema, following the path of noir. Inspired by a news story and included in the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs from the 55th Cannes Film Festival, The embalmer wins the David by Donatello for the best script.

In 2004 Matteo Garrone he gets back to work, still choosing to go back to a story that really happened and talking about a man obsessed with female thinness. The film is First love, which goes to Berlin Festival and is played by Michela Cescon and from Vitaliano Trevisan, the latter also a screenwriter.

Before Garrone dedicates himself to his sixth and perhaps most important film, four years pass, during which he works as a screenwriter on behalf of others and finds time to make a cameo in it. The Caiman by Nanni Moretti. In 2008 Gomorra was released, which is inspired by the famous book of the same name by Roberto Saviano and is presented in competition at the Cannes Film Festival. The jury is bewitched by the monumental fresco on the Camorra and by the performances of the many non-actors, and awards the film the Grand Prix. Seven David di Donatello and two Silver Ribbons follow. In 2012 Matteo signs Reality, a work very different from Gomorrah who relies on the talent of an unknown face. We are talking about Aniello Arena, a semi-liberty prisoner and actor of the Compagnia della Fortezza of the Volterra prison. The story of the Neapolitan fishmonger obsessed with Big Brother leads Matteo Garrone again in Cannes and, once again, the Grand Prix arrives for him. In 2015 the director returns to the episodes film – and to Cannes – with The telling of tales, in which he also calls to recite big foreign names, including John C. Reilly, Salma Hayek and Vincent Cassel.
