BIOGRAPHY OF MICHAEL J. FOX
Actor. The son of an aviation colonel and actress Phyllis Fox, he was only 10 years old when his face appeared on Canadian TV screens in the “Leo and Me” series. After a quiet childhood, at the age of 15 he decided to abandon his studies to pursue an acting career. (Once famous he regretted this choice and laboriously returned to the books to obtain a diploma.) He changed his stage name. , putting the ‘J’ in place of the ‘A’, in homage to the actor Michael J. Pollard, who he loved very much. After other television series, his name also arrives in Italy thanks to the success of the telefilm “Casa Keaton” (1982), where he plays Alex P. Keaton, a rampant economist, a role he manages to have by chance: initially, in fact, the character was to be played by Matthew Broderick, who quits at the last minute. On the set he meets Tracy Pollan, whom he will marry six years later and with whom he will have four children. True success came in 1985 when producer Steven Spielberg sensed that he was the perfect person for the role of Marty McFly, star of the smash hit “Back to the Future” directed by Robert Zemeckis. In the same year, Fox was able to confirm his talent as a brilliant actor in “The Secret of My Success”. The face and body of an eternal adolescent, however, limits his artistic possibilities and his career. With the intention of relaunching his own image, Fox tries to propose himself as a dramatic interpreter: unfortunately his rehearsals in “The Thousand Lights of New York” (1988) and “War Victims” (1989) do not seem to receive public acclaim. and criticism. He then decides to return to the old role of Marty McFly in the two sequels “Back to the Future II” (1989) and “Back to the Future III” (1990), but both films do not have the same success as the first. While on the set of “Doc Hollywood – Career Doctor” (1991), he realizes that his fingers are twitching, without him being able to control them: at the medical examination he is diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. However, he continues to act in films such as “Blue in the face” (1995) with Harvey Keitel and Madonna and in “Suspended in Time” (1996) by Peter Jackson, director of the saga “The Lord of the Rings”. In 1998 Fox made his condition public through an interview for “People” magazine and began investing time and money in the “Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research” which he created. Later he undergoes a thalamotomy surgery to better control the tremor that afflicts him. Despite the success of the surgery, Fox decides to reduce work commitments to focus on his foundation and to devote more time to the family. In January 2000 he left the role of Michael Flaherty, a consultant to the mayor of New York, in the TV series “Spin City”, which was awarded in the USA. A convinced vegetarian, he is very committed to social issues: thanks to his intervention, the American National Institute for Health (NIH) in 2000 allocated 81.5 million dollars for research on Parkinson’s in the USA.
