PETER COYOTE BIOGRAPHY
Actor. After graduating with a BA in English Literature from Grinnell College, he moved to San Francisco to pursue a master’s degree in creative writing from San Francisco State University. After briefly attending the San Francisco Actor’s Workshop he joined the San Francisco Mime Troupe, an independent theater company for which he wrote, directed and performed several shows including “Olive Pits”, winner of the 1967 Obi Award. awarded by the ‘New York Village Voice’ newspaper. From 1967 to 1975 he decided to devote himself to the search for ‘absolute freedom’. He is one of the founding members of the Diggers anarchist group that deals with providing food, lodging and medical assistance to the ‘flower children’ (which later became the Free Family, the group that established a chain of ‘communes’ on the west coast of Pacific). The experiences lived during that period were reported by the actor in his autobiography “Sleeping Where I Fall” (published in 1998 by Counterpoint Press, the chapter entitled “Carla’s Story” was awarded the Pushcart Prize 1993/94). In the mid-1970s, he accepted a position as a drama teacher at a public school, became a member of the California State Arts Council (later became its president), and performed at the Magic Theater in San Francisco, where he was noticed by a Hollywood agent. In 1980 he made his debut in the cinema with “Die Laughing” by Jeff Werner under the name of Peter Coyote – there are many hypotheses on the origin of the coyote surname, including that of a spiritual encounter with said animal. The following year he is in the cast of Walter Hill’s “Warriors of the Silent Swamp”, which brings him to the attention of director Steven Spielberg, who decides to assign him the role of the scientist Keys in “ET – The Extraterrestrial” (1982 ), the film that led him to international success. He has since appeared in numerous film and television productions. Appreciated by European directors, he starred in Pedro Almodòvar’s “Kika” (1993) and Roman Polanski’s “Bitter Moon” (1992). With his warm and melodious voice he has often been the narrator and voiceover of documentaries, series and films for television and interpreter of commercials. Among his passions are photography and music, he plays the guitar and writes songs. He has never abandoned his political ideals, he is a member of an organization that fights against pollution in the San Francisco Bay and in 1997 he was delegated to the Convention of the Democrats. He is also a member of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, the Screen Actor’s Guild, the American Federation of Radio and Television Artists, the Actor’s Equity and the Player’s Club, a New York venue. He lives in Marin County, Northern California. From 1975 to 1998 he was married to Marilyn McCann with whom he had a son and a daughter.
