BIOGRAPHY OF PIETRO GARINEI
Author and screenwriter of theater, of magazine and musical comedy, of radio and TV programs, director and theatrical impresario. He starts working as a sports journalist and then collaborates with the humorous newspaper “Cantachiaro”. In 1945 with the magazine ‘Soffia sò …’ the artistic partnership with Sandro Giovannini begins, which will continue until the latter’s death in 1997. Together with his great friend he also writes the lyrics of successful songs, including ‘ Sentimental ‘, Wanda Osiris’ workhorse, ‘Arrivederci Roma’, brought to success by Renato Rascel, ‘Sunday is always Sunday’, theme song for the television program “Il Musichiere”. In 1947 it is ‘Tomorrow is always Sunday’ but the great success arrives in 1952 with ‘Attanasio Cavallo vanesio’, written for Renato Rascel for which they will also ‘make’ Alvaro pretty corsaro ‘and’ Tobia candida spy ‘, real ones’ musical fairy tales’. What is considered the first musical ‘made in Italy’ will be in 1954 “Giove in double-breasted” written for Dapporto next to which they chose Delia Scala, who had already made about forty films but who will reach fame thanks to them with the musical comedy which for the first time in Italy remains on the bill for two years. Delia will be the prima donna, in her very modern way of being soubrette, also in “Buonanotte Bettina” (1956) – their first show to be translated and performed abroad – and “L’adorabile Giulio” (1957). “Rinaldo in campo”, author of the music as well as the protagonist, will see Domenico Modugno at the height of the world fame obtained with ‘Volare’ (In the blue painted blue). But the masterpiece will be “Rugantino” (1962) whose first edition, with Aldo Fabrizi in the role of Mastro Titta, was brought to success by Nino Manfredi and Lea Massari, replaced by Ornella Vanoni in the edition presented in New York in 1964. ( In 1978 the musical will be reprized and interpreted by Enrico Montesano and Alida Chelli, while in 1998 the two main roles will pass to Valerio Mastandrea and Sabrina Ferilli.) In “Ciao Rudy” (1966) the two authors-impresarios bring Marcello Mastroianni back to the stage in the role of the legendary and beautiful Valentino. “Alleluja brava gente” (1970) marks the debut of Gigi Proietti, while “Add a place at the table” (1974-1976) for three consecutive editions sees Johnny Dorelli as a true protagonist. And it is the last of the great comedies signed by G. and G. because Sandro Giovannini leaves the scene due to a fulminating illness on April 26, 1977. Pietro Garinei alone continued the opera for almost thirty years making the Sistina in Rome a theater with Broadway-worthy programming. The best of the Italian musical was born there, thanks to the imagination, perfectionism and professionalism of two great men of entertainment and culture. Pietro died at the Forlanini hospital where he had been hospitalized for a few days.
