BIOGRAPHY OF RAINER WERNER FASSBINDER
Film director. He was born into a middle-class family and he owes his passion for cinema to the fact that his mother translator (after separating from her doctor husband) from an early age ‘parked’ him in the cinemas of Munich to go to work. But the divorce of his parents causes him depressive crises with consequent problems at school. At 15 he declares his homosexuality, leaves his studies and finds a job. In 1965, his application to enter the Berlin film school was rejected. He trained at the ‘Fridl-Leonhard Studio’ in Munich, then in 1967 he joined an avant-garde group, the Action Theater, where he met Kurt Raab, Hanna Schygulla and Peer Raben, all future protagonists of his films. The following year the group was dissolved by the judiciary for ‘suspected illegal activities’. Fassbinder and some others then give life to the Antitheater, where the future director also gains writing experience. He approaches the cinema gradually, with the making of short films and the interpretation of some films including “Baal” by Volker Schlondorff and “The boyfriend, the actress and the ruffian”, by Jean Marie Straub. In 1969 he made his feature film debut with “Love is colder than death”, presented at the Berlin Film Festival. In the same year he made three other films including “Why was Mr. R. been seized by homicidal madness?”, Which obtained many acclaim. Fassbinder puts his versatility and experience to good use in films, also serving as composer, set designer, director of photography, editor and producer. From 1970 he began working for television with films, adaptations of plays and dramas. At the same time, the activity in the cinematographic field continues. In 1971 he founded his own production company, ‘Tango Film’ and participated in the foundation of an independent distribution company under whose wing the most interesting exponents of the new German cinema gather. The following year he obtained his first commercial success in Germany with “The four seasons merchant”. Abroad, however, he became known for “Fear eats the soul” (1973). Starting from the second half of the seventies (when his fame has now consolidated in spite of the numerous and ferocious criticisms he receives in his homeland and his threats, never made, to move to the United States) the most demanding productions begin: in fact, he signs “The Marriage of Maria Braun” (1978), “Lili Marleen” (1980) and ‘Lola’ (1981). In 1978, impressed by the suicide of his lover, he shoots “A year with thirteen moons”. In 1982 he made his two latest films: “Veronika Voss” and “Querelle de Brest”. In 1984 “Martha” was released posthumously, a film shot in 1974 and blocked for a long time due to a legal dispute over the rights of the novel from which it is based. He died on the night of June 10, 1982 from an overdose of cocaine and sleeping pills. At his side is found the unfinished screenplay of “Rosa Luxemburg”.
