BIOGRAPHY OF RAY CHARLES
Singer, Composer Nicknamed ‘The Genius of Soul’ and ‘Brother Ray’ The son of a poor family, he moved as a child to Greenville, Florida. His father soon leaves the family. The youngest brother, George, dies in an accident, while he, at the age of 6, becomes blind due to glaucoma. He joined a Baptist choir at a very young age. He studies music at the State School for deaf and dumb children, demonstrating an innate talent. As soon as he was fifteen he became an orphan. At 16 he plays in the village band called ‘The Florida Playboys’. In 1948 he moved to Seattle, where he founded, together with guitarist Gossady McGee, the McSon Trio, a jazz band that became famous in nightclubs. He leaves the McSon Trio because he gets a contract with Swing Time Records of Los Angeles. His first hit was in 1949, “Confession Blues”. In the 1960s, already at the height of his success, he was arrested for possessing heroin and marijuana. He gets divorced twice and has 12 children with different women.
