RAY RANGE BIOGRAPHY

In 1988, after making his first three albums with Helloween (Walls of Jericho and the first two Keeper of the Seven Keys), guitarist and composer Kai Hansen decided to leave the band. The reason for this decision was the diversity of ideas about the evolution of the group with the then singer Michael Kiske. He initially helped the Blind Guardians with some studio work. Finally he decided to start his own project with his old friend Ralf Scheepers (singer) and with Uwe Wessel (bassist) and Mathias Burchardt (drummer). Gamma Ray was born and without any surprise from anyone, their sound was very close to that of Helloween. This was a project between Kai Hansen and singer Ralf Scheepers: Gamma Ray’s career proved incredibly successful, while the previous band, Helloween, developed their potential in different directions. Hansen became at one point the lead guitarist, singer and composer of music and lyrics for Gamma Ray. With the initial lineup they released the album Heading for Tomorrow in February 1990, and the same year also the EP Heaven Can Wait with second guitarist Dirk Schlächter, while Uli Kusch replaced Mathias on drums. In 1991 their second work, Sigh No More, was released and in October they began a 50 date world tour. The third album, Insanity and Genius, was released in 1993 with two new members: Thomas Nack replaced Uli on drums, while Jan Rubach replaced Uwe on bass. In September Gamma Ray, along with Rage, Helicon and Conception, embarked on the Melodic Metal Strikes Back tour. This feat contributed greatly to the release in December of their double Power of Metal CD, and to the Power of Metal and Lust for Live video clips.
