The entry into the world of entertainment takes place for him through the theater: in 1971 stands out in “Rosencrantz and Guilderstern Are Dead” is in 1973 appears in the stage version of the musical Grease.

The debut in front of the camera dates back to 1975, when he is given the opportunity to work in the police force Report to the chief of police. In 1977 the actor stands out in the erotic drama Looking for Mr. Goodbar, chronicle of the sexual awakening of a young teacher. The first leading role comes with Days of Heaven (1978), second directed by Terrence Malick.

Two years pass and the actor becomes a star, as well as a sex symbol, thanks to a film by Paul Schrader that immediately enters the collective female imagination: American Gigolo. Throughout the 1980s, Richard Gere slips a string of hits that enhance his beauty and masculinity, starting with Officer and gentleman (1982). Also worth mentioning are At the last breath (1983) – remake of the homonymous film by Jean-Luc Godard – e Cotton Club (1984) – film by Francis Ford Coppola set in the 1930s and centered around the famous New York club.

After some little-appreciated rehearsal, the actor back on the crest of the wave thanks to Pretty Woman (1990), variant of George Bernard Shaw’s “Pygmalion” in which he is a lawyer who falls in love with a prostitute. The pairing Richard Gere / Julia Roberts proved successful, so much so that in 1999 the two returned to duet in If you run away, I’ll marry you, always directed by Garry Marshall. First, however, Richard allows himself some forays into genres never attempted before: in 1991 he is directed by Akira Kurosawa in Rhapsody in August is in 1995 it is Lancelot in fantasy with Sean Connery The first knight. Gere also shows some skill in thriller Splinters of fear (1996), in which he supports Edward Norton.

The 2000s began for Richard Gere with the romantic Autumn in New York (2000), in which he shares the set with Winona Ryder. Much more significant is the experience of Doctor T and the women (2000), which gives the actor the opportunity to get to know Robert Altman. And if neither The Mothman Prophecies – Voices from the Shadows (2002) nor Unfaithful – Unfaithful love (2002) do justice to his talent, will be the Rob Marshall’s six Oscar musical Chicago (2002) to make him win the first important prize: the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Leading Role of comedy or musical.

Another fruitful collaboration is the one with Lasse Hallström, which opens with The Cheat – The Hoax (2006), and continues with Hachiko – Your best friend (2009). Not to be forgotten, always in the first decade of the new century, I am not here (2007) of Todd Haynes, biopic dedicated to Bob Dylan in which Gere is Billy the Kid. Shortly thereafter, Richard works with Antoine Fuqua for Brooklyn’s Finest (2009) and then impersonating information tycoon George Putnam in Amelia (2009).

Definitely more demanding for him is the test in Time Out of Mind (2014) of Oren Moverman, who entrusts him with the role of a man who lives on alcohol and hardship. In 2015 Richard Gere joins the cast of Return to the Marigold Hotel. The actor, who supports several humanitarian causes and the Independence Movement of the Tibet, he was married to Cindy Crawford and actress Carey Lowell.
